Even hearing the word “rodent” is enough to make some Virginia Beach folks shudder. Although rodent control isn’t always top-of-mind, picturing a dirty little creature with two long front teeth scurrying around your house probably makes you want to call a rodent exterminator. Rodents are a problem year round, as they sneak into home for food, water, and shelter. If you see a mouse or rat in a high traffic area of your home, they may be alone, and a mouse trap should take care of them. However, if you see rodent in a low traffic area of your home, such as the basement, garage, or attic, you may have a serious infestation.
Rodents become a larger problem in Virginia Beach during the colder months, as they work harder to find somewhere to take shelter for the winter. This can pose a threat to homeowners, because no matter how clean your home is rodents will find it very attractive. Any small gaps in the outside of your home, such as a crack in the foundation, an attic vent, an open garage door, or loose siding can provide an entrance point for rodents.
That’s where we come in – Fox Pest Control wants to help you get rid of rodents.
You might already know you have a rodent infestation but here are a few of the most common signs rodent exterminators look for in the Virginia Beach area.
The first sign of a mouse or rat infestation in Virginia Beach is their droppings. These are usually found in their favorite hiding spots, such as basements, attics, crawl spaces, behind shelves or drawers, or in cabinets or pantries.
Sometimes the second most common sign of rodents in the house are nightly noises when mice or rats scurry from place to place, fight each other, or gnaw on something.
Because their teeth never stop growing, mice and rats have a strong urge to chew things. They can chew through wood, hard plastic, or even metal to get to food, find shelter, or make nests.
Though less common than the other signs, it is possible to surprise mice and rats in the house when turning on the light in the kitchen, attic, or basement. In rare cases, a mouse or rat may run into the open to find water, food, or better shelter.

Fox Pest Control. No Bugs. Simply Better.
The best control of rodents in Virginia Beach is prevention. Filling in any holes of the house’s exterior and sealing any food in airtight containers will make your home less attractive and less accessible to them.
But if you already have a problem and need to remove rodents, these measures won’t fix the problem on their own. Call Fox Pest Control today for a free estimate, and make your home safe and comfortable again.
Yard Rodents: Gophers and groundhogs dig massive tunnels and eat plant roots, fruit, and vegetables. Voles tend to stay above ground and eat plants. Mice and rats may also dig burrows through the grass. Moles also dig tunnels while they look for insects, but they aren’t technically rodents.
House Rodents: Mice and rats chew on wiring, gnaw on walls, invade storage containers, rip up papers and fabrics, and contaminate food. Rats and mice can also spread fleas and ticks as well as diseases like hantavirus, leptospirosis, tularemia, and the bubonic plague.
Squirrels are a very common problem in some areas. They can crawl inside attic spaces, chew through wood or wiring, and spread diseases, fleas, and ticks.
A bite from a rodent can be extremely serious, but these are relatively rare. Rodents typically try to stay away from humans and avoid contact with us.
Humans contract diseases spread by rodents when we are bitten, when we come in contact with a rodent’s droppings or urine, or if we handle a rodent, including a recently dead one. If you're bitten by a rodent, seek medical attention immediately.
Common signs of rodent activity in your house in Virginia Beach are:
Feces. Rats tend to gather theirs in one particular spot while mice scatter them everywhere.
Sounds at night. Rats sometimes fight over food or dominance and squeal and make rustling noises. You might also hear mice scurrying or chewing on something.
Nests. Mice and rats make nests after they mate. They prepare for juveniles by building nests out of soft materials like paper, fabric, pillow stuffing, bits of cloth, loose carpeting, or wall insulation.
Rodents like rats, mice, and squirrels have a strong sense of smell, which is why cleaning the house and storing both your food and pet food in airtight containers is one of the first steps to rodent prevention.
Professional pest experts can help you discover specific things you can do to keep rodents from invading your home in Virginia Beach.
Yard Rodents: Gophers, groundhogs, mice, rats, and voles will come to your yard looking for plants, nuts, berries, fruit, and shelter. Moles also like to dig in the yard while looking for insects, but they aren’t technically rodents.
House Rodents: Rats and mice are the most common rodents that will invade homes.
After they come inside your place in Virginia Beach, mice and rats will find a hiding place that is as close to food and water as possible. The most obvious room to hide in is the kitchen, although rodents are timid enough to hide in the basement, attic, or somewhere in the wall voids.
Body size. Adult rats are larger than adult mice. Norwegian rats also have a characteristic hunch in their back.
Ears and Tails. Rats have larger, more pointed ears and shorter tails than mice. A mouse’s tail has fine hairs along it while a rat’s tail is entirely bald.
Droppings. The common Norwegian rats have cylindrical or pill-shaped droppings, and roof rats have a banana shape to theirs. Mouse feces look like little grains of brown or black rice
Dropping placement: Mice scatter their droppings randomly throughout their hiding places. Rats are more aware of their droppings and find a hiding spot to use as a latrine, sort of the way a cat uses a litter box.
Behavior. Mice are extremely curious about everything in their environment and will explore new things readily. Rats are “neophobic,” which means they are frightened of new things and require more time to grow accustomed to something new.
Society. Rats and mice both can live in colonies or family groups, but rats can create very large colonies very quickly. Compared to mice, rats are much more violent with each other when they dispute over territory, dominance, or food.
Intelligence. Unlike mice, rats can observe and mimic each other’s behavior to navigate the world around them and avoid anything that seems dangerous.
Isaiah was very personable and eager to tackle the issue of mice and rats that had caused some sever damage to my house. I leave 5 stars for the tec that came out. As for the office staff, I would leave 1 star. When I called in for the issue of rodents and set up the date, I was very clear that the attic is very small and yet they set out Isaiah, who like me isn't a small guy. I was also told that I would be given a time window as to when the technician would arrive. Once again, I never recieved a time window and instead lost an entire day of work as the technician didn't show up until after 3pm. When I called the office at 1100 to maybe have an idea as to a time, i was told that the technician would let me know when he/she gets there. This is very frustrating to say the least.

As a new customer of Fox Pest Control, I am very pleased I signed up for their services! I did away with other pest control services (except for termite prevention) for years due to high employee turnover and too much upselling. I am so impressed with Austin, Delaney, and the services and value offered by Fox Pest Control! Both Austin and Delaney were extremely friendly and professional, and Delaney really took her time treating my home. Plus, they are environmentally friendly, which is very important to me. Thanks, Delaney and Fox. I look forward to your keeping me insect and rodent free!

Had Aaron W. come out to my house for my initial spray and cleanup of webs/wasp nests. He did a great job and was very professional about it. Even had a few good conversations with him as he took care of spraying the inside of the house. I had mentioned previous issues with Rodents and he told me if I hear or see them again to give them a call and they will come out to take care of it. The cost was also great, previously out in New Mexico I had to pay around $500 for someone to come out and another $250 a quarter to have it re-sprayed. With Fox my Initial was under $200 and the quarterlies will be under $150, couldnt ask for much cheaper if I am honest.

Brooke and Hanna just completed our initial application for insects and rodents. Can't say enough about how professional they were. Arrived on time and explained all that they were going to do to get rid of our pest problem. Application

Long story short, our pest control company failed us miserably. We called Fox pest control today, they fit us in within 2 hours of the call. He even showed up a little earlier than expected. After a quick run over of what we were dealing with, Brent started looking the outside of the house over, inspected from top to bottom, closed up several possible entry points that we thought our previous pest control company handled, sprayed around the outside, removed cobwebs and then moved to the inside. Again he inspected thoroughly, climbed into the attic and actually looked around carefully to make sure that he closed other possible entry points. It really helped open my eyes to all of the things our pest control service wasn't doing. He answered our questions and we felt a lot more confident in his ability to help take care of our rodent problem than we ever did about our previous pest control service. When you own a home, all the responsibility of upkeep falls on you and Fox Pest Control and especially BRENT, really helped us to understand the issue we are facing and are helping us find a solution to the problem. A great big Thanks for helping us be a little less stressed during this holiday season! Thanks again Brent!

We recently had Fox Pest Control come out to inspect our home crawlspace for rodent activity and seal any outside entryways to the crawlspace. Tevin came out on 11/5/19 and did an outstanding job inspecting the crawlspace and identifying the access area where rodents could enter. Today on 11/6/19 Marq came out to seal the entryway on the home exterior, under the sinks downstairs and reinspect the crawlspace....both technicians were very professional and answered any questions I had. They will followup next week to ensure all is well under the house.....highly recommend Fox Pest Control!
